THE VOWELS

UNIT ONE
The Vowels of the Korean Alphabet
YOONG
Before you start you must study and understand The introduction.
The introduction to the vowels begins with the consonant
Yoong, similar to the English “ing” as in ring.
SAY: YOONG (no English equivalent or sound).
WRITE: From right top downward, a simple “o.”
Important: please understand that the consonant yoong serves two
purposes:
1. At the end of a syllable sounding in ing as in sing, but more on this
later.
2. The yoong that silently fronts another symbol or syllable—only in
written form—that we will learn in this first lesson. It will appear that this
form of yoong is more of a filler symbol.
We will begin by sounding then writing the vowels. Remember that the
yoong is silent, not sounded, when it precedes a written vowel.
